WELCOME  » WHO IS AMBIORIX
NL |  FR |  DE |  EN

Ambiorix is a true hero of Belgian history. Many businesses and cafés have named themselves after him and his statue stands tall on Tongeren’s main square, the Grote Markt. However, Ambiorix is also a mystery. We only know him thanks to the fact that he stood up against that well-known Roman general and politician, Julius Caesar, during the first century BC.

In Ambiorix: king of the Eburones, we set out on a quest for the man and his people. We also go back further in time, to the days before Ambiorix, before the Eburones even. Who were the people who lived in this region, and elsewhere in Europe, from circa 800 BC? What were their lives like? And what did they leave behind?

Over 600 objects from nearly 40 collections will reveal the story, and in a moment, you will experience the confrontation between Ambiorix’s Eburones and Caesar’s Romans – as if you were there.
