AMBIORIX: KING OF THE EBURONES

The year is 54 BC. On an early winter’s morning deep in the Eburone heartland, there is tension in the air. The Roman legions, led by Cotta and Sabinus, have abandoned their winter camp. Faced with a joint revolt by Gallic and Germanic tribes, they have fled. Ambiorix, one of the Eburones’ two chiefs, has promised the Romans safe passage through his territory. Ambiorix’s ruse works – the Romans are trapped like rats …
From 5 December 2009 till 13 june 2010, the Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren will tell the stories of what happened to Ambiorix, of the roots of Celtic culture and of the world of the Eburones.
Over 600 stunning artefacts will bring back to life the heydays of the Celts. These artefacts, on loan from renowned museums in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland and the UK, include gold treasure, swords and masks, as well as everyday objects.
Most of the artefacts have never been displayed in Belgium before.
Highly realistic reconstructions of human figures, films, touch screens and educational installations combine to make this an exhibition to be experienced rather than just seen.
The highlight is a short film on the battle between the Romans and the Eburones.
